Intervention tracking

Every day, teams work across the machine buildings: preventive maintenance, tests, consolidation, repairs and new installations. Many of these activities will trigger perfectly expected alarms in the control room.

The TI operators are informed of these works, and record them in the TI Logbook. Each entry is followed through until the work is declared finished.

This record answers the single most important question the control room faces when an alarm appears:

Is this a genuine fault, or the expected consequence of work we already know about?

Without it, every alarm would have to be treated as a fault. With it, operators can qualify an alarm in seconds and direct their attention where it is really needed.

Fault response coordination

CERN does not stop at 17:30, and neither do faults.

Outside normal working hours, the TI control room is the entry point for every technical infrastructure fault. When an event is detected, the operators assess it, decide which specialists are needed, and call in the corresponding standby services.

Many faults do not belong to a single team. A water leak in a machine building may require:

  • The cooling and ventilation standby team to isolate and drain the circuit.
  • The electrical standby team to secure the equipment at risk.
  • The fire brigade, if safety systems are involved.
  • The relevant machine or experiment specialists.

TI coordinates these teams from a single point, sequencing their interventions, keeping each one informed of what the others are doing, and following the situation until the installation is back to normal.

TI will create an urgent intervention in IMPACT if the situation requires granting the teams involved immediate access to a specific zone.
